Politics And The Necessary Wake Up Call!

by Rusty Stewart, Ph.D.

Many of us are angry at the state of politics in the world. In fact, I have been criticized for spending too much time on the topic in my workshops and college classes. I am also aware of how our egos do not want to confront things that are seemingly out of our control, or not of our own doing. Like the ostrich with its head in the sand, denial is a powerful defense mechanism. Resistance breeds contempt! Resistance magnifies illusion! Whatever we resist we have energy with. Somehow we have to work with the resistance, breath into it, flow with it, embrace it, learn from it, and surrender to it. If we are resisting politics we are in some way still participating in the energy of it and reinforcing it. Now doesn't that piss you off?

When I bring up politics in my workshops it is to wake people up! Then it is to take responsibility. Change happens from the inside out, not the outside in. The outside in approach is always predicated on victimhood. There is nothing I can do. I have nothing to do with the way things are in our political system. Bullshit! You, me, and everyone else has everything to do with our current political system. It's predicated on fear and control, isn't it? What is resistance? It's fear and control. So by resisting we perpetuate it. We can't hide from the system. We also can't fight the system. However, we can change the energy within ourselves that affects others and eventually change the system through our organic growth process.

We need to wake up and be aware of the reality of what is really happening around us in the political process. It is a mirror of what we need to heal within ourselves. That is what I mean by taking personal responsibility. We need to live by example. We cannot do that with our heads in the sand. Take the energy of anger and transform it into healing those aspects within yourself. Do not resist or it will persist!! I love the way it is phrased in the “Tai Chi Journey.” “I, alone, am responsible for the peace and tranquility of the Tao. This means that where there is disharmony anywhere in the universe, it is my fault, if there is someone starving, if there is war, if someone is homeless, if someone is racially oppressed, if nature is polluted, if a child is abused, if someone is sick, it is the Tai Chi persons fault, If I had done what my nature requires of me, only harmony would reign throughout the Tao. But this realisation does not come from a logical analysis of life, nor does Tai Chi teach it: it gradually develops from within the Tai Chi student myself as I journey ever nearer the Oneness with my own nature. Tai Chi's method for overcoming the disharmony of the world is by example” (Lash, 1988).

My experience with Taoism, A Course in Miracles, quantum physics, and the indigenousness cultures I have worked with is that this is the only way. We are one. My thoughts affect the whole. I create my reality. I need to wake up to the reality of the world, what is really happening and taking place, and take total responsibility and be fully aware of what I created. When I come to that sometimes horrifying realization, then I can begin to change it by changing myself and perceiving differently. Now I am empowered in a humble way as the co-creator that I am.

We need to bring light to darkness. By accepting what is, and by looking it straight in the eye, fear dissipates. We all need to get our heads out of the sand and wake up. We cannot heal the unconscious if we allow it to remain unconscious. The reality of what is going on in politics is a necessary wake-up call. We need to heal. We need to realize our greatness. We need to take back our Divine power. It all happens with me. And it all happens with you. Don't buy into the egos victim game. It's a very old game and it can't be won because it's built on illusion. Find your inner truth, and the illusion will disappear. Fear not my brothers and sisters, it's only smoke and mirrors!
